Matthew Thomas

Founder, Managing Principal

Best described as a consummate entrepreneur, Matthew has been creating, developing, and acquiring businesses for over 15 years. He is a seasoned value investor, software architect, and strategist in industry mergers. Matthew believes in a driving purpose for innovation and collaboration in our environments. His commitment is to ensuring team members have everything they need to be successful, while our portfolio companies provide a positive impact on the local areas we serve.

Prior to a business career, Matthew served in the United States Marine Corps, a decorated War Veteran who served Battle of Fallujah and Operation Enduring Freedom in the Pacific. A recipient of the Horatio Alger Distinguished American Award and a three time Greensboro Preservation Award winner. He has also chaired on the Aycock Historic Board, currently serves on the EC of Greensboro Neighborhood Congress, and Junior Achievement mentor serving both in Grimsely and Dudley High school.


Sarah Thomas

Organizational Architect

Sarah brings over 16 years of operational and management experience in both advertising and real estate acquisitions to Edge Water Group. Sarah uses her business savvy, discipline, work ethic, and tenacity to successfully identify, evaluate, recommend, and initiate improvement and change within an organization. Sarah’s expertise with all aspects of a business, from day-to-day operations to strategic planning, has allowed her to hone the skills needed to perform evaluations and deliver superior results.

Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and master’s degree from Bard College, New York. She currently serves as Chair of Board Development for Preservation Greensboro.


Dennis Rookwood

Vice President of Strategic Analytics

Dennis Joined the Edgewater Group, Inc as Vice President of Strategic Analytics in September 2017. Dennis has extensive strategy, business intelligence and financial management experience. Dennis has worked at organizations ranging between $50 million and $6 billion dollars. His expertise in economic value creation, innovation and collaboration has supported the development and implementation of business intelligence solutions and value creation initiatives responsible for creating well over $20M of net improvements to the bottom lines.

Prior to joining the Edgewater Group, Dennis was a Finance leader of Healthcare Analytics and Supply Chain for Inmar, Inc. His team led the restructuring of billing analytics for a $50M corporate integration. In addition, As a leader in finance, Dennis played a role creating in a strong valuation and subsequent sale with a 12x EBITDA multiple on a billion dollar transaction. Prior to Inmar, Inc Dennis held a position as a Business Intelligence leader at Randolph Hospital and was instrumental in innovating the technique and approach to market share analysis and cost accounting. He also served on the the Board Planning Committee. For his innovative work blending cost accounting and Market Share, he was invited to Speak at IBM Truven Health’s national advantage conference. Early in his career, Dennis had the opportunity to serve as operations and finance analyst at Wake Forest Baptist Medial Center and The Cleveland Clinic. He later became a national implementation consultant focused on value creation strategies.

Dennis holds an MBA from the Monte Ahuja College of Business, Cleveland State University and a B.S. in Laboratory Animal Science with a concentration in Biology and Chemistry from NC A&T State University.

Dennis also serves on the Board Finance Committee at World Victory International Christian Center and enjoys spending time with his Wife and two boys.


Angie Byrnes

Marketing Partner

Angie, founder of Spark180, serves as Edge Water Group’s fractional CMO. Angie brings more than 20 years of marketing and business development experience to Edge Water Group. In her role, Angie is responsible for developing and leading the implementation of the marketing strategy for Edge Water Group’s portfolio of companies. Prior to founding Spark 180, Angie spent 13 years with imc², a leading digital agency. Angie served as vice president of marketing, where she built and led the company’s marketing department, which was responsible for all facets of the company’s marketing, including strategy, analyst relations, marketing communications, and public relations. Prior to leading the marketing team, Angie created the agency’s first BD communications department, where her team played an instrumental role in bringing new clients such as Procter & Gamble, Pfizer, Pizza Hut, GSK and The Coca-Cola Company on board. Before joining imc², Angie led the marketing and BD communications team for WorldTravel Partners, a B2B travel management company, and she began her career as a technical writer at EDS.

Angie has an MBA and BA from the University of Texas, Dallas. In her spare time, Angie loves traveling with her family and works out as much as she can to keep up with her role as a #boymom to two active young sons.


Laura McKnight, C.P.A.

Financial Officer

Laura McKnight brings over 10 years of accounting experience to the Edge Water Group. She started her career working in Public Accounting for Ernst and Young and more recently worked in the Pharmaceutical industry as a Manager of Financial Reporting. She is a Certified Public Accountant and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Marshall University.

Laura was born and raised in Charleston/Huntington, WV and now resides in Burlington, NC with her husband and two children. She is active in her local church where both she and her husband serve as staff members – advising in the growth and leadership of the congregation as well as leading small groups and organizing events. For fun, she enjoys outdoor activities such as – swimming, hiking, biking and running.


Carrie Tetreault

Business Manager

Carrie Tetreault brings over 15 years of accounting and management experience to Edge Water Group. She has worked first hand with several brokers in assisting with the buying and selling of companies and assisting with preparation of business evaluation benchmarks to help give insight regarding investments, operating strategies, and management objectives to business owners who are looking to improve operations and financial performance.

Carrie holds diplomas in billing and coding and is continuing her education in business studies. She is family oriented, participates in numerous community and church activities, and loves to travel. Successful in business, parenting, and navigating her children through the teenage years, she has also survived the Carolina Rebellion Music Festival.


Dustin Chandler

Project Manager

As Edge Water Group’s project manager, Dustin Chandler is responsible for managing the renovation of newly acquired rental properties, as well as the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of existing properties, to ensure they are always in market-ready condition.

Dustin was born and raised in Kitts Hill, Ohio and began developing a strong work ethic and attention to detail through the demanding responsibilities of farm life. He enlisted in the Marines his junior year of high school, and during his tenure in the military, he earned two meritorious promotions, was the non-commission officer in charge for the majority of his enlistment, managed over $3 million in Defense Travel System funds, and was lead machine gunner for the Battalion Commander’s Personal Security Detail.Outside of work, Dustin enjoys basketball, paintball, time in the woods, and anything physically competitive. He is also a dog whisperer and heads up canine training of Edge Water Group’s office dogs Otto, Ava, and Jayda Bear.


Jenny Spivey

Executive Assistant

Jenny Spivey brings over 14 years of administrative experience to Edge Water Group. She has held positions in both medical and business enterprises, both in purchasing and customer service. Jenny’s ability to learn quickly and handle anything that comes her way is unparalleled.

Jenny was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina and graduated from Guilford Technical Community College in Business Administration in 2008. She is married and has two amazing kids. Jenny has a strong sense of devotion to her family, friends, and co-workers. She is active within her community and her children’s schools. In her spare time, she likes to practice Tae Kwon Do and spend time with family and friends. She likes all types of music and loves to laugh and have fun! Unlike Carrie, she thrived at the Carolina Rebellion!
